Environmental Chemistry Department (MILK)

Over many years environmental chemistry has been one of NILU's important research fields. The Environmental Chemistry Department has its focus on environmental pollutants and polar issues, and is dealing with research and trace analysis in organic and inorganic environmental chemistry.

The department has a comprehensive and highly developed range of instruments at hand that are specially adapted to the department's needs. The instruments are distributed over two laboratories, one located at the main office at Kjeller and one at NILU's office at the Fram Centre in Tromsø.

MILK has its main focus on the study of new and established pollutants in the whole environment. This results in the department's expertise in all kinds of environmental samples from air, water and sediments of biological material. Sampling is part of both, the department's and the institute's research and of the order by authorities or private customers.

MILK's research activities have their main focus on:

  • Study of new pollutants in the environment
  • Study of dispersion of pollutants in the environment
  • Development of customized chemical analysis
  • Development of sampling methods

In recent years the institute has expanded its work with environmental chemistry to include calculations/models and effect studies.

MILK's analysis are accredited according to NS-EN ISO/IEC 17025
