Ground level ozone
High concentrations of ozone at ground level may cause health problems for parts of the population, particularly for those with lung and respiratory problems.

Exposure to tropospheric ozone may have adverse effects on vegetation Exposure to high concentrations of tropospheric ozone may be harmful for human health Tropospheric ozone contributes to the greenhouse effect There is extensive activity at NILU related to research and monitoring of tropospheric ozone. NILU operates a monitoring network for ozone financed by the Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT) through the national programme for pollution monitoring. The stations cover the country from Birkenes in the South to Ny-Ålesund at Spitsbergen in the Arctic. On-line measurements of surface ozone. The stations are part of an on-line automated network reporting to the NILU databases. The ozone concentrations at the Norwegian monitoring sites from the last couple of days are also available on the NILU web. These measurements form the basis for the Norwegian authorities' information to the public when hourly concentrations exceeding 160 µg/m3. As Chemical Coordinating Centre (CCC) of EMEP (European Evaluation and Monitoring Programme), NILU is responsible for collection, quality assurance and reporting of ozone measurements from the whole of Europe. Development of numerical computer models is given high priority at NILU. Presently, NILU has available photochemical models on many scales, ranging from plume models used for studying emissions from oil platforms in the North Sea to models on a hemispherical scale.
